KATE DE LEO

Artist Statement

I am a Community Artist and Sculptor based in Wales. I work with a range of differentages and abilities, creating large artworks and projects within communities. My main inspiration comes from the people I meet and the history of the places I go.

I adore creating alongside people as their excitement and creativity foster an environment of wonder and innovation. I appreciate providing people with the opportunity to work with materials they wouldn't ordinarily use and to expand their creative comfort zone through the art process.

In my exhibition piece for the Art Trail, ‘Celebrating Love in Pontypridd, I have created a wedding dress inspired by the residents of Pontypridd’s passion for the town, as well as the history Pontypridd Museum’s building. The wedding dress has been co-designed with the people of the town by inviting them to create drawings of wedding dresses and facilitating conversations around garment design. The pattern for the fabric for the dress is a collection of articles and photos I have been sourcing from the Pontypridd Observer newspaper, wedding announcements, contributions from the local community and from the Museum's own chapel records.

You are invited to read of the articles on the dress and celebrate the love of the people of Pontypridd. There is also a miniature tactile version of the dress on the wedding table display, as well as a book containing the inspiration for the dress design by the people of Pontypridd. I hope you enjoy the experience.

Come and join us on Saturday, 18th May between 11am-12pm for when the ‘Pontypridd Bride’ will come to life!
